5 Things I’m Grateful For This Summer | Collaboration With Daisy’s Corner

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the blog. This Friday’s post is in collaboration with my online bestie Daisy, from Daisy’s Corner. Organised girl boss Daisy had this collab planned far in advance, and finally it is time to share it with you! In this post I will be sharing 5 things I’m grateful for this summer. Early Summer Mornings

I don’t get up early every day, although I am making an effort to. I just love the golden glow in the morning! Sitting in the garden with my journal, or a good book, in the early hours is an unbeatable feeling. Plus, with the weather being so hot in the UK at the moment, it’s about the only time I can go outside without roasting to bits.

Frozen Fruit (Blueberries In Particular)

This time last year I had not yet discovered the joy of eating fruits frozen. Berries, such as blueberries and raspberries, are super yummy when frozen. They’re are comparable to sweets, except better in my opinion! All fruit is a blessing, and I could not live without it. Lockdown has made so many of us more grateful for the little things. I try to believe that I was expressing gratitude before lockdown, but never like this.

My Garden

All throughout lockdown I have been especially grateful for my garden. In the beginning stages when only 1 hour of exercise daily was allowed, I felt so grateful to have my outdoor space. We’ve started inviting a few people round for barbecues and it’s been an awesome family space. On top of that, it’s served as our own ‘camping’ park. Since we can’t go on holiday this year, I have been camping in the garden for a breath of fresh air – literally.

That I Can Go For Long Walks

As we are no longer restricted to one hour of exercise per day, I can now get out on long walks. I live semi-rurally, where there are many amazing walks nearby. I am extremely grateful for that opportunity. The countryside, and the beautiful hills, are where I belong. If I could walk up and down a mountain every day, I would. It gives me such a buzz (much more satisfying than post-workout adrenaline!)

Audiobooks

Lockdown forced me to start using a library app, rather than the in-person experience. That led to my discovery of audiobooks! I’ve always wanted to try out this way of reading before, but I thought I needed to spend money. Turns out, the library has them there for me! Without coronavirus I would have never discovered this feature. Although it is a dreadful virus, the consequential lockdown it caused has brought many a realisation. Audiobooks are such a convenient way to get through books while completing other activities. My favourite is colouring and listening, or even when I’m editing photos for Instagram.

I have a childish obsession with rainbows…

We are missing out on so much opportunity this summer. My family didn’t book anything, but planned to go inter railing around Italy. In the past year I have also raised £1800 to go on a Guides camp, which was inevitably cancelled. Despite the drastic change of plans, I’ve still had an awesome summer thus far. Counting my blessings has kept me positive and inspired! I do encourage any of you feeling a tad low to write down 5 things you’re grateful for either in the comment section or on paper. Really reflect on what you have written down. I promise you, it’s the best habit to get into a routine of.

Top 5 Easy Tips On How To Glow-Up/Get Out Of A Slump

Deciding to take a break wasn’t an impulse decision that happened overnight. In fact, the factors leading to my unexplained hiatus were brewing for a few months. I soldiered through my schedule, ticking boxes and the sort, until I realised that I probably need to step back and consider myself for a second. Because though I was promoting self-care and exercise, I wasn’t doing it for myself. It was very hard, at first, to begin my mini ‘glow-up’. Especially because beforehand my schedule revolved around school and being busy. When school closed and all my plans were cancelled, that’s when I found time on my hands. I didn’t spend my extra time productively and ended up binge-eating and watching a lot of TV. It was unhealthy but I caught myself before it got worse. I plucked myself out of my sad hole and said, ‘let’s take a break from social media, start working out, continue with my yoga and stop snacking’. The expectations of myself weren’t realistic, which meant sticking to them felt like I’d conquered heaven and earth. I’m still in the process of keeping to them, of course. Health is for life, not just for January. I’m not an expert but here are few tips for any of you that want to glow up:

1) Exercise

Workouts aren’t my cup of tea but I found an amazing YouTuber called Lucy who does 7 minute regimes that get your heart rate up but aren’t so hard that you collapse on the ground! I found it easy to slip it in to my mornings and it has had a profound impact on the rest of the day, making me feel like I can conquer my to-do list. You’ve heard me rant about yoga previously, and I also do that every morning. At the moment I can only go out for exercise once a day and it’s always a walk with my family. Though I only do a little bit, it has massively changed my life.

2) Waking Up At A Consistent Time

You don’t need to be a morning person to be productive. I always wake up at 6am but if you go to bed later than obviously you still have the same hours in the day (06.00-22.00 or 09.00-01.00). Go to bed at a consistent time and wake up at the same time too. Your body will get into a routine as long as you don’t skip a day (including weekends). I’ve not to a point where I can trust myself to wake up without an alarm but I’m sure you can.

3) No Snacking

It’s tricky, but it’s good for me. It means I can appreciate my meals more and I hardly ever feel bloated. I still have a tangerine mid-morning but I’ve cut out the late-night snacking thing that I really struggled with. 

4) Be Forgiving

I’ll have a packet or crisps every now and then. I’ll miss a workout or wake up later. The key is to not be hard on yourself. And the more forgiving you are, the easier it is to carry on again. I used to do workouts every day but then I’d miss one. Once I’d miss one, I’d think it was pointless then all of that effort has gone to waste. Please don’t do that to yourselves! 

5) To-Do Lists

It’s second nature for me to write a to-do list every day. I find them an effective way to keep on track of what you need to do. Especially with home-schooling, it’s important I’m getting my work done. Sometimes I might need to set my own work just to make sure I don’t fall behind! I keep my to-do lists in my bullet journal. As my bujo is a ‘pretty’ place, I feel a certain extent of pressure to tick off my lists just because it makes me spreads look complete. It’s a healthy pressure though and often means I get things done.

Those are all the five tips I have for you today. I am not perfect and I just want to make it clear that I don’t always keep to these tips. This blog is supposed to be as raw and truthful as possible. This sort of lifestyle is me at my peak, obviously why I’d like to share it with you. I don’t feel compelled to telling you about my unhealthy habits because that’s my past. I only want this to be a positive space, and I am living proof that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. So if you are going through a rough time, please talk to me or someone that you trust. I am always here for those of you that need me. If you don’t want to share with me, just try to follow these few tips. They helped me out of a rut and I’m sure they’ll help you too.

Yoga | March For Mental Health

As part of Mental Health March I decided to practise a little bit of self-care. I started doing yoga in the mornings as a form on meditation! For a while I’ve wanted to try it out and there’s no time like the present, right?

I started this journey around the end of February. To have the time to do yoga I had to get up bright and early! My regular sleep schedule is 22:00 – 06:00 so jumping to 05:30 wasn’t such a huge leap. Now I spend the first 30 minutes of every morning practising yoga. Before last month I had never properly done yoga. I knew a few moves, such as the world-famous tree pose but beyond that I wasn’t knowledgable. So I decided to take guided yoga sessions.

At the moment I’m doing a 30 Day Challenge with Yoga With Adriene. She is a really good mentor, especially for beginners! If you are considering starting yoga, don’t hesitate! It’s completely free on her YouTube channel.

My experience has been really positive. It’s great to start the day with mindfulness, it sets the whole day up to be good. My emotions have been rational and I’ve started to notice a lift in my mood. I’ve just been more aware of my feelings, therefore dealing with them better.

In terms of physical improvements, I’ve not seen much so far. That’s because I’m only a few weeks in! It does make me feel better though. I think I’m more flexible than before. And by starting the day with exercise, it makes me want to continue being active throughout the day. I’ve been completing the 10,000 step goal more often! It may be down to something else, but I think it’s mainly the yoga.

A lot of people recommend exercising first thing in the morning but every workout regime I’ve tried – I never stuck with. Yoga is cleverly disguised. It feels more like meditation than exercise. So I don’t dread it when I wake up every morning! 

Before I forget, I ought to do my yoga for today!
